Homeless Program

A welcoming place for food, basic needs, connection and support.

Hiiye’yu Lelum’s Homeless Program provides practical, low-barrier support for people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of becoming homeless in the Cowichan Valley.

The program creates a safe place where people can have breakfast, take care of basic needs, connect with staff and Elders, and access referrals to other services and supports.

What We Offer

People accessing the Homeless Program can connect with:

  • Breakfast — a welcoming meal and place to connect.

  • Showers & Laundry — access to facilities to support personal care and wellbeing.

  • Clothing & Essentials — clothing and seasonal items are available when supplies allow.

  • A Safe Place — somewhere to come in, rest and connect with others.

  • Health Support — opportunities to connect with visiting health professionals.

  • Elder Support — connection with Elders within the program.

  • Outreach — relationship-based support for people accessing the centre and those encountered in the community.

  • Referrals & Connections — connections to housing, health, counselling, treatment, employment and other community services.

A Meal, A Place of Connection

Breakfast often provides the first point of connection.

By creating a consistent and welcoming space, staff have opportunities to build relationships with people, understand what they may need and help connect them with additional supports.

Depending on individual needs, this can include referrals to health services, alcohol and drug counselling, employment and training, housing and other community resources.

Working Together

The Homeless Program works alongside community partners to strengthen the network of support available to people experiencing homelessness.

Partners have included Cowichan Tribes, health and outreach services, RCMP, Salvation Army, the Bread Basket Society, Warmland Shelter, BC Housing PODS, overdose prevention services and other community organizations.

The program is overseen by the Tze Tza Watul Board, bringing together community agencies that support Hiiye’yu Lelum's ongoing work with people experiencing homelessness in the Cowichan Valley.

Tze Tza Watul — “Working together (in sincerity) for the betterment of the People/community.”
