Aboriginal Homeless Outreach Program (AHOP)
Culturally grounded outreach and support for Indigenous people experiencing homelessness.
The Aboriginal Homeless Outreach Program (AHOP) works to reduce homelessness within the Indigenous community by helping people connect with housing, health, cultural and community supports.
The program focuses particularly on people experiencing chronic or long-term homelessness and those living on the streets, providing practical, relationship-based support wherever people are at.
How We Can Help
AHOP provides individualized outreach and support that may include:

Housing Support — helping with housing searches, applications and connections with landlords.

Rent Assistance — providing rental assistance to eligible clients.

Emergency Support — helping clients experiencing urgent needs access available emergency assistance.

Outreach & Wellness Checks — connecting with clients in the community and maintaining ongoing relationships and wellness checks.

Advocacy — helping clients navigate services and advocate for their needs.

Applications & Identification — assistance with social assistance applications, identification renewals and other paperwork.

Practical Support — helping clients understand and connect with resources available to them.

Cultural Support — providing cultural guidance when needed.

Referrals & Connections — connecting clients with Hiiye’yu Lelum programs, government services and other community agencies.
Moving Into a New Home
AHOP recognizes that finding housing is only one part of the transition.
For first-time renters, the program can provide start-up kits with household essentials such as bedding, towels, dishes, cookware, utensils, cleaning supplies, bathroom necessities and laundry supplies.
The program also collects and distributes seasonal necessities when available, including warm clothing, summer clothing, blankets, tarps and tents.

Meeting People Where They Are
Outreach happens beyond the walls of Hiiye’yu Lelum.
Staff connect with people through regular community walkabouts, visits to shelters and community services, appointments with clients and landlords, and ongoing one-to-one support.
AHOP also works alongside community partners and participates in housing, harm reduction, community engagement and community development networks to strengthen the supports available to people experiencing homelessness.
Connection to Other Supports
When additional support is needed, AHOP can connect clients with other Hiiye’yu Lelum programs, including Alcohol and Drug Counselling, Family Support Workers, Employment and Training, and Ready to Rent, as well as other community and government services.
