Family Pathways Program

Walking alongside families and youth through child welfare involvement, transition and change.

Family Pathways provides support and advocacy for parents whose children are at risk of being removed or have been removed from their care. The program also supports youth in care and youth aging out of care, up to age 25.

Our approach is grounded in acceptance, non-judgement and relationship. We work alongside families and youth to recognize their strengths, build confidence, navigate systems and stay connected to family, culture and community.

Support for Parents and Families

Family Pathways can support parents and families who are involved with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) or delegated child and family service agencies.

Support may include:

  • Advocacy — helping parents understand processes, prepare for meetings and have their voices heard.

  • Child Protection Navigation — supporting families as they navigate involvement with child protection services.

  • Safety Planning — walking alongside families as they understand and work toward safety plans.

  • Meeting Support — attending meetings with MCFD, delegated agencies and other services alongside families.

  • Building on Family Strengths — recognizing the work families are already doing and supporting continued growth, confidence and family unity.

  • Connections & Referrals — connecting families with Hiiye’yu Lelum programs and other community resources.

Youth Navigation

Family Pathways also provides navigation and relationship-based support for youth in care and youth aging out of care, up to age 25.

The Youth Navigator works to build a safe and trusting relationship with young people while helping them identify and work toward their own goals.

Support can include housing, budgeting, healthy parenting, life skills, navigating the court system, and connections to counselling, employment and training, childcare, sports, recreation and other community resources.

The program also encourages connections to family, community and culture as youth navigate the transition into adulthood.

Walking Alongside Families

Family Pathways recognizes that involvement with the child welfare system can be a challenging time for families.

Rather than focusing only on what is going wrong, Pathways staff work with parents to identify strengths, recognize progress and support the work families are undertaking toward greater stability and family unity.

Our practice honours the importance of strong relationships and works in ways that are respectful of each family's culture and personal teachings.
