Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and/or other Complex Developmental Behavioral Conditions (CDBC)
Walking alongside children, youth and families with understanding, advocacy and practical support.
The FASD/CDBC Key Worker Program supports families parenting children and youth ages 0–19 who have, or are waiting for, a diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) or another Complex Developmental Behavioural Condition (CDBC).
Key Workers help children, youth and families better understand developmental differences, recognize strengths, navigate systems and connect with the supports they need.

How We Support Families
Support is individualized to each child, youth and family and may include:
-
Understanding FASD & CDBC — helping families understand a diagnosis or developmental needs while identifying and building on the child or youth’s strengths.
-
Navigating Assessment & Diagnosis — helping families understand and move through the steps involved in seeking an assessment or diagnosis.
-
School & Education Support — attending school meetings, supporting transitions and helping families advocate for their child's learning needs.
-
Medical & Community Support — accompanying and supporting families through medical appointments, service planning and other community systems.
-
Advocacy & System Navigation — supporting families at inter-agency, legal, educational and other meetings and helping connect them with appropriate services.
-
Youth & Life Skills — working one-to-one with youth to build life skills and explore continuing education, employment and other opportunities.
-
Workshops & Education — providing information, workshops and training about FASD and CDBC for families, professionals and community members.
Support Where Families Need It
Families don't always have to come to an office to receive support.
Key Workers can connect with children, youth and families at home, at school, in the community or at Hiiye’yu Lelum, depending on the needs of the family.
Support may be ongoing or may become especially important during periods of change, such as entering a new school, seeking an assessment, navigating services or preparing for adulthood.
Building on Strengths
Every child and youth brings their own strengths, abilities and ways of experiencing the world.
The Key Worker Program works alongside families to better understand those differences and identify strategies that support the child or youth at home, at school and in the community.
For older youth, this can also include building independence, strengthening life skills and exploring opportunities for education and employment.
Working Together
Supporting children and youth with complex developmental needs often involves many people and systems.
The FASD/CDBC Key Worker Program collaborates with schools, social workers, healthcare professionals, developmental and assessment services, government agencies and community organizations to help families access more coordinated support.
Key Workers also participate in community committees, professional networks and ongoing training to strengthen awareness and understanding of FASD and CDBC.
